7 Reasons why Real Madrid is lagging this 2020/21 season.

Real Madrid ended the 2019/20 season on a decent run of form. They regained the La Liga title after 3 years since 2017. That title didn't come in Los Blanco’s possession easily. They were neck and neck with their counterparts Barcelona, almost the entire season, and had to fight for every point until matchday 38!

But some performances in the last season rang the alarms at all levels at the club. Real Madrid showed poor performances in both Copa Del Rey and The Champions League in continuation from the previous season.

This season, Real Madrid has failed to carry last season’s consistency so far. They have already been knocked out of Copa del Rey and sit third on the La Liga table, five points behind the league leaders, Atletico Madrid. The chances in the champions league also look very slim.

Below are the 5 main reasons why Real Madrid is lagging this 2020/2021 season.

Real Madrid

1.Poor Transfer Decisions.

Despite all the worrying signs appearing in the last season, the club did not spend much in the 2020 summer transfer window and 2021 winter transfer window. Rather Zidane did the opposite of that, and let go of several key players either on loan or sold permanently!

Some of these players include:

-Martin Ødegaard
-Borja Mayoral
-Gareth Bale
-Brahim Díaz
-Dani Ceballos
-Jesús Vallejo
-Takefusa Kubo
-Achraf Hakimi

The sale and loan deals of a few of the older players such as Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez were logical as they were beyond their career’s prime form and Real Madrid decided to cash in on them. But letting go of promising talents was a big gamble by Zidane. He decided that letting them go was a better decision than letting them play. A decision that didn’t pay off!

2.Expectations from youngsters.

Since the last 5 years, Real Madrid has signed numerous new players including a mix of promising talents and proven galacticos. But a major part of the transfer saga has been a nightmare for Zidane and Real Madrid. Only Thibaut Courtois and Ferland Mendy earned a place in Real’s playing eleven.

The attack is the area where Real Madrid suffered the most. Almost all new forwards failed to fill the gap left by the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo. The top signing of Eden Hazard also proved to be the one to forget.

3.The Midfield Problem

When it comes to testing and developing new players for several different positions, Zidane has trusted players in defensive and offensive positions only! He never thought of finding a replacement for his vintage midfield.

Zidane still uses the same Golden midfield trio of Kroos, Casemiro, and Modric. In fact, he never used any other midfield in his entire managerial career so far! But the bright aspect of this aging trio has slowly faded away. These 3 players still perform at the highest level and have produced some great performances this season. But when they don’t perform, Real Madrid suffers incredibly. Even when these players need rest, Zidane seems to run out of replacement options.

Zidane uses his all-around players such as Lucas Vazquez and Nacho Fernandez at almost all positions as a QUICK FIX for his long-term problems.

4.Lack of a Plan B.

Zidane proved to be a risk-averse manager over the years as he never truly trusted new formations other than the usual 4-3-1-2. He also tried 4-3-3 few and far between, but that’s it! His techniques and game plans have not evolved over the years and right now his tactics are pretty much an open book.

Because of the lack of evolution, Real Madrid lacks the element of surprise in its playing style. It heavily relies on Its key players to perform consistently almost every matchday, week in, week out. The bench does not offer much in terms of creativity.

5.Never ending injuries

real Madrid squad suffered 40 various injuries this season so far, which are 25 more than Atlético Madrid (15), and 15 more than Barcelona (25), and 22 more than Sevilla (18). Only four players in the first-team squad have not sustained any injuries this campaign including Casemiro, Ferland Mendy, Andriy Lunin, and Vinícius Junior.

In almost the entire campaign so far, a fully fit squad hasn’t been available to Zidane. Hazard is the player who has suffered the most injuries and missed the most matches so far.

6.No motivation.

Since the UCL final against Liverpool in 2018, Real Madrid players never showed true motivation levels on the field. The Champions League used to be a blockbuster at Santiago Bernabeu, but now it feels like just another day at the office for Los Blancos. Lack of innovation in both, the squad and the tactics have derailed the team's motto.

There has also been a few issues reported regarding the players’ salaries. The financial difficulties caused by Covid-19 put the club in a difficult position. Players were reluctant to reduce their salaries when the club asked them to. The new contract offers are also not so lavish as they used to be. This financial issue is also not going anytime soon. Thus, the players have more challenges to focus on, rather than just their game.

7.You guessed it! COVID-19

The only fun thing that was left to cheer about, was the electric experience of Santiago Bernabeu. Covid-19 triggered early upgrades for the stadium. So far this season, Real Madrid has been playing at an empty Alfredo De Stefano Stadium. The matches will continue to be played at this particular stadium until upgrades at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu are fully completed.

There are still a lot of restrictions in Spain relating to crowd gatherings. There is no crowd to lift the spirit of the players and cheer their efforts. This will continue to be the case until football is fully recovered from COVID-19.
Future of Zidane?

These problems are not going away anytime time soon. In fact, these problems are only going to evolve in the future. The club president Florentino Perez has shown complete trust in Zidane. So far, It has been reported that Zidane will continue to carry out his managerial duties in the 2021-21 season as well.

Zidane has averaged 3 titles every season during his managerial time at Real Madrid. In Fact, he has never finished a season without a trophy! These are very impressive figures. But things can quickly change at Real Madrid for successful managers. A trophyless season might change the current perspective of the president.
