Max Verstappen (Red Bull) is the leader of the Styrian Grand Prix and will try to consolidate this condition on the Spielberg circuit, owned by his team. On a track he knows well, the Dutch driver was the benchmark during the first and second training sessions. In the first round, the race also featured an incredible Pierre Gasly (Alpha Tauri) who set the second-fastest time, just ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Notable performance from Alpha Tauri, Red Bull's second team, as apart from Gasly's second place, Yuki Tsunoda finished fifth. The Alpine also played a very good role, with Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon setting the sixth and seventh fastest times respectively. Instead, Ferraris are left in the middle of the table. Verstappen also sets the best time in the second session.

Verstappen was also the fastest in the second round of free practice in the Red Bull Ring. The world leader completed the 37 laps in 1: 05: 412. Fernando Alonso (Alpine) finished sixth and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) eleventh.

Hamilton would have set the fastest time, but it was not counted as he overstepped the limits of the track.
